Workshop on “Farmers’ Rights in India: Interface with Legislation” | 12 October 2016 | Ahmedabad

The Centre for Social Justice conducted a workshop on “Farmer’s Rights in India: Interface with Legislation” on the 12th of October at the Janvikas Training Centre in Ahmedabad.

The workshop focused to equip the participants with an adequate knowledge of:

  • Schemes
  • legislations available in India
  • The role of government and services providers in facilitating their rights

The implementation and contemporary practices regarding the above mentioned provisions was discussed.

The first session was about the provisions and schemes available in India and the process how they can be availed. The objective of the session was to make participants aware of government initiatives and their responsibilities when it comes to agriculture auxiliaries like irrigation, seed and plant variety, agricultural subsidy etc.  The channels of these schemes were traced and discussion on ways to bridge the gap, if any, took place.

Mr. Bharat Sinh Jhala from CRANTI took the next session on “Registration of farmers in Panchayats,  land rights and land ceiling” in the State of Gujarat. He also shed light on the current practices of the government and discussed on the ways how things can be taken forward with regards to the rights of the farmers. Process of filing RTI was understood.

Professor G.V.  Ramanjaneyulu, Executive Director, Centre for Sustainable Agriculture (CSA), took us into the depth of what a farmer’s rights could be with regards to land, farmers as consumer, famer rights on seed, Price guarantee system etc.  The Plant Variety Protection and Farmer’s Rights Act, 2001 was extensively dealt with.

The last session was about the “Women Farmer Rights Bill, 2011”. Women as land holders and farmers in India, have not been able to establish their identity as one. This Act was assessed with respect to its feasibility to protect the rights of a woman farmer.

The session was then followed up by an open discussion of the participnats to share their experiences, the difficulties they incur and possible solutions to it.
